Dilemma of Preaching

Passages like John 5 are a real problem for me as a preacher because they’re so packed with doctrinal and practical themes and I am left with the painful decision about what to preach and what not to preach. I just can’t cram it all into one half hour. We can read this passage in about five minutes and not notice the richness and depths of its content. That is the benefit biblical preaching- it causes us to slow down and look at the text more closely.[1]
[1] Reading scripture is like flying over a country and looking out the window; preaching is like taking a train, you get a closer look at things. And, here’s my plug for adult Sunday School, Sunday school and Bible study are like riding a bike. All three are useful, all three are essential.
